  Mission Statement

Gwin Elementary will establish a strong foundation for lifelong learning for all students by providing opportunities for academic, social, physical, and emotional growth in a child-centered environment. We will use a variety of research-based strategies to ensure that each student reaches his/her maximum potential.

We believe:

·         All children can learn and experience success.

·         Instruction and assessment should be multi-faceted and implemented through best practices.

·         Children build on prior knowledge, so they will be provided meaningful opportunities to construct their own knowledge through a             multitude of experiences.

·         An environment that encourages curiosity, risk-taking, and self-expression is essential for learning.

·         Cultural diversity, individualism, and compassion for others enhance our environment.

·         Continuous improvement is essential to the success of our children, school and community.

·         The arts are an essential component in the overall development of our children.

Harriette W. Gwin Elementary School, named for a Jefferson County Board of Education member, opened in January 1976. It had sixteen classrooms for grades one through seven. In 1992, an addition doubled the size of the school and in 2000 the front of the building was remodeled.

We currently have an approximate enrollment of 507 students. In addition to offering state and district curriculum, we encourage students to explore their interests through clubs and organizations. These opportunities offer hands on experiences for all students.  Examples include Gwin Ovations Choir, Dance Club, Running Club, Student Council and opportunities to explore other cultures through annual events such as International Day.  Contact us for a visit!
